Founded in 1993, Berlin-based architectural practice Barkow Leibinger has become known for a research-based approach to design that fully explores the possibilities offered by tools, fabrication techniques and materials. We were commissioned by Barkow Leibinger to help them develop their first monograph—our third book project together—to be published by Hatje Cantz. The challenge for Spielraum was to translate the more process-based techniques of our previous collaborations to the more project-based format of a monograph. Grouped in five thematic fields, the publication makes use of simple yet bold typography and a grid layout allowing for flexible text and image compositions.
