We were commissioned to design a catalogue that documents and accompanies an exhibition of fifteen rarely seen works by the Hungarian artist Simon Hantaï. A series of gate folds emphasises the scale and detail of the up to 5 meter wide paintings. By folding, painting, and unfolding the canvas Hantaï developed an ‘automatic’ approach to painting that often exposed the naked material of the canvas. Referencing these contrasts we created a folded jacket out of untreated canvas juxtaposed against brightly coloured endpapers suggestive of Hantaï’s palette.
Simon Hantaï is part of a series of unique publications designed for Timothy Taylor following the new identity and ongoing art direction we have created for the gallery.
