On the occasion of the exhibition Elizabeth Catlett at TOWER MMK in Frankfurt, Zak Group was commissioned to design the exhibition catalogue — the first comprehensive survey of the revolutionary American-Mexican artist (1915–2012).

The burnt-orange, clothbound cover features Catlett’s 1973 work Which way?, screen-printed to retain the fine detail of the original lithograph. The book translates the exhibition experience to the page, presenting prints and sculptures in the same room-by-room, work-by-work sequence as the exhibition. Each gallery space was defined by a distinct colour, reflected in the publication through carefully matched, inkjet-printed cloth tip-ins introducing each section; offset-printed background colours behind artwork cut-outs; and photographs of the installation.

The catalogue includes more than 150 works spanning eight decades — lithographs, woodcuts, linocuts and sculptures capturing African-American life and history. Edited by Susanne Pfeffer, the book features texts by Hannah Black, Benjamin H.D. Buchloh, Manthia Diawara, Terri Geis, Melanie Anne Herzog, E.N. Mirembe and Precious Okoyomon.
