Is This Tomorrow? wins the Cornish Family Prize for Art and Design Publishing

Zak Group has been awarded the Cornish Family Prize for Art and Design Publishing for the catalogue Is this Tomorrow? as part of the Melbourne Art Book Fair. Commissioned by the Whitechapel Gallery, the publication originally accompanied the cross-disciplinary exhibition of the same name that brought together over 38 contributors from across the visual arts, architecture and culture.

Is this Tomorrow? curated by Lydia Yee presents the ambitious reinterpretation of the seminal 1956 exhibition This Is Tomorrow, once again inviting twelve pairs of artists and architects to envision the future of our society. It offers ten propositions from practitioners including 6a architects, Adjaye Associates, Cao Fei, David Kohn Architects, Cécile B. Evans, Simon Fujiwara, Amalia Pica and Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, responding to urgent issues we face in the twenty-first century.

Zak Group’s catalogue reinterprets the historic predecessor designed by Edward Wright. A wrap-around cover with holographic title conceals the blue spiral binding, a reference to the iconic precursor. In a similar vein, the title pages for This Is Tomorrow are reintroduced, but shuffled to spell out the revised title. A new bespoke stencil typeface translates Wright’s visual language into the present.
